How To Network Your First Job!


HOW TO NETWORK FOR YOUR FIRST JOB



Before taking the FIRST STEP TOWARD GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT, please consider the following sources to make your search more time effective:

Local Paper
School Resource Center
Youth Job Fair (check with Career Services Center for upcoming dates; Tentative dates are March/May 2002)

OTHER LOCATIONS THAT PROVE TO BE GREAT SOURCES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

· Local movie theaters (Edward’s, Pacific, UA 6, etc.)
· Grocery Stores (positions, such as Courtesy Clerk, Stock Clerk, Deli Assistant)
· Cleaners
· Day Care Centers
· Fast Food Restaurants (especially new restaurants coming to our city.  IE: Church’s Chicken, Del Taco, etc.)
· Party City
· Hallmark Stores
· Target Stores (employer will hire 17 year old applicants)


WORD OF MOUTH IS GOLDEN!!!
Speak openly to adults who may have information to share regarding current employment leads.  In addition, your local church will have current information to share.  Talk to your school counselor, community members, or teachers about any company you are interested in.  You never know what information they may have!J











THE EXTREME DO’S AND DON’T

 IN APPLYING FOR A JOB


DO-


Present yourself in a professional manner
Remember to introduce yourself to the front receptionist or manager
Bring a black or blue pen when asking for a job application
Do come to meet the employer with a positive attitude
Be prepared to interview on the spot with the employer
Give accurate information; do not lie about work history, personal history or school status

DON’T-

Bring friends with you when applying at a place of business
Do not approach the employer in casual clothing.  Always come in professional or appropriate clothing.  You never know if the employer wants to interview you on the spot!!!
Do not ask the employer for a pen, phone book, or calculator.  Have your own supplies ready
Do not call the employer asking, “ Are you guys hiring right now?”  Always, always apply in person.


The delivery in how you present yourself to an employer is critical for you becoming the new employee!!!
